Galerie Janine Rubeiz in Abu Dhabi Art 2012
This year, Galerie Janine Rubeiz brings to the Abu Dhabi Art Fair public a striking installation/performance by Mazen Kerbaj in the Signature section. The artist creates in real time and delivers an exhibition of drawings and paintings, while being himself the exhibition. For the whole period of the Art Fair, Kerbaj retreats (and exposes himself) into a glass cage where he works. Also in the Gallery section, Galerie Janine Rubeiz presents recent works by major Arab artists such as paintings by Yvette Achkar, Huguette Caland and Jamil Molaeb; sculptures by Adam Henein and photography by Rania Matar and Marya Kazoun.
Anchored in a strong commitment to modern and contemporary art in Lebanon, the Galerie Janine Rubeiz takes its roots from the legacy of ‘Dar el Fan’, a highly qualified art space and cultural platform under the direction of Janine Rubeiz between 1967 and 1976. The present gallery (1993), carrying her name and run by her daughter Nadine Begdache, holds strongly to the belief that cultural development is an integral part of the socio-political maturity of the country. The gallery strives to make Lebanese contemporary modern art known in Lebanon and abroad. It hosts the works of internationally recognised artists, and participates with its artists
in a number of regional and international fairs. The gallery takes it upon itself to facilitate the widening of the forum of art, seeking a multicultural exchange of artistic experiences.
Since 1997, the gallery has participated in Euop’Art (Geneva, 1978) and the ‘St’art 2001’, la Foire d’Art Contzemporain de Strasbourg-France and ‘Visages Francophones’ in Cahors, France (2002). In the United Arab Emirates, the gallery participated in the modern art fair ‘Art Paris Abu Dhabi’ (2007), in ‘Art Dubai’ (2009, 2010) and ‘Abu Dhabi Art’ (2009) as well as ‘Art Dubai’ in 2011/2012. Annually, Galerie Janine Rubeiz holds seven to eight exhibitions, including the works of Lebanese masters still living and working, as well as young innovative artists working in painting, multimedia, sculpture, installation, video and photography.
